PIRATES FALL TO UMBC 83-65

Baltimore, Md. – The University of Maryland-Baltimore County scored 51 second half points on their way to an 83-65 victory. The Pirates of Hampton University fall to 5-6 on the season while UMBC improves to 8-5, which is their best start in over 22 years.
The Pirates senior guard Rashad West led both teams in scoring with 20 points on the day. The Retrievers had five players scoring in double figures led by Cavell Johnson who had 19 point on the day.
The Pirates came to the game ready to play or at least that is what it seemed like as they started the first half on a 10-0 run. The Retrievers were not going out without a fight as they went on a 5-0 run with 2:31 left the half to get back within two points. Hampton shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field and a perfect 100 percent (6-of-6) from the charity stripe in the first half. The Pirates were led by sophomore Theo Smalling who scored 10 points in the first and Cavell Johnson had 13 for the Retrievers.
UMBC would go on a 15-0 run with the score 45-47 in favor of Hampton, which lasted from 14:38 to 9:13 and gave them the lead for good. Hampton would battle back as much as possible and get back within six points but that was the closest they would get on the night. UMBC would go on to win by 18 points. The Retrievers scored 11 of their final 19 points at the charity stripe.
Hampton only shot 44 percent (24-of-54) on the night from the floor and 63 percent (14-of-22) from the charity stripe. The Pirates also scored 34 points in the paint and 15 point off the bench.
Hampton will be off until December 29 when they will host the College of William & Mary.
